I recently read a study stating that travel bans have a very small impact in curbing the spread of a virus. The reason being that there is no practical way for most countries to stop the flow of people entirely. In the airport and airplane, there are a number of air filtration systems that make it one of the safer places to be with regards to disease transition. That being said, I think banning countries is very political and is an easy way to show you are doing something in response to the new variant.
